For a while, I’ve had it on my heart to return the favor that was passed to me, to share the love of our Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ. Although I share it with my friends, the ninth-grade students at church and the kids I met on a mission trip, I wanted to go deeper. It came to me one night as I was looking for excuses to procrastinate on doing homework. I was to search for someone who is completely lost and share the Gospel with him or her. Up until that night, I had no idea what I was actually searching for, but I looked into my past and found the place I felt the most alone and abandoned. This was when I was homeless.
The calling to share the love God gave me with a homeless person took root in me. Last Sunday, I took a friend new to the faith with me to see hands-on discipleship. We went to downtown Dallas and searched until we found the one that God urged us toward. God had a spotlight on William. He was alone, bundled up and avoided eye contact, but that only pulled us towards him even more. I asked if I could talk to him, and the first thing he said was, “Look what I found.” He held out a brochure with the title “What can the Bible do for You?” towards me, later giving it to me as a gift. After a few minutes, William became so open that we were able to exchange some jokes and memories. William allowed me to share my story after I listened to his, and I recounted to him how Jesus saved me from the horrible road I was once on. I shared with him what JESUS could do for him and how much he is truly loved. We gave him a Bible, and he couldn’t have been happier receiving it. We shared some scripture with him, listened and laughed with him for about an hour. Honestly, it felt like it was only a few minutes.
Although he knew about Jesus and the Bible, William was lost before we met him. He knew scriptures but had never been saved, so before I left Jesus came into his life and brought William into His family. This experience not only changed William’s life, but also showed my friend what it looks like to share the love of Christ.
